Adventure Tours of Brazil

Our Adventure Tours of Brazil are all basic ideas that can be tailor-made to match your requirements. Any tour can include one or more destinations, and can be purely dedicated to hiking, although some mountains may include a little climbing that is still suitable for those without much experience. We can also arrange serious climbing trips. We can also mix them with other activities such as climbing, kayaking or tandem hang-gliding flights, some regular tourism, and some nightlife. We include all that you need during your trip, the accommodation with breakfast; all airport transfers and other road journeys; any activities and excursions with English-speaking guides and relevant entrance fees; plus some popular extras. For our Hiking Tours of Brazil, you only need to bring your favourite hiking boots and regular outdoor clothing and equipment. Any parts where a little climbing is necessary will include ropes, helmets and safety harnesses. All hikes and climbs are undertaken with an experienced, qualified local guide, with activity insurance included. All other equipment such as kayaks, mountain or road bikes, and of course your hang-gliding wings will be provided!

This radical few days of activity in Rio de Janeiro takes you to the top of at least five of the city peaks as well as waterfalls, beaches, islands and lagoons. Hiking and climbing Dois Irmaos, Sugar Loaf Mountain, and Pedra da Gavea, kayaking around offshore islands, cycling to the statue of Christ the Redeemer, and finally jumping off Pedra Bonita to take your first hang-gliding flight.

This Radical Rio de Janeiro Tour is a fabulous way to see this marvellously exotic city while taking part in various adventurous activities with Brazil Adventure Tours.

Combines With: Buenos Aires; Buzios; Paraty & Ilha Grande; Sao Paulo; Petropolis to Teresopolis Trek.

Best Time to Visit: This tour can be taken all year round with December to February being the hottest, most humid and busiest months, but also with more rainfall. April to July or August are the months that give the best chance of good weather, warm but not hot or humid, and with clear blue skies.

Itinerary

Day 1
First Views of Rio de Janeiro

Destination: Rio de Janeiro

Your Radical Rio de Janeiro Tour begins on arrival in the city, where you will be met by your Brazil Adventure Tours guide who describes the Marvellous City to you during the journey to your hotel. After checking in, you head out for your first hike to the top of Dois Irmaos, the mountains overlooking Ipanema Beach. The hike begins in the Vidigal Favela, a fascinating mix of scenery and the unique culture of Rio's poorest mountain-side neighbourhoods, before taking you up through vegetation to the rocky peak. The views over the neighbouring Rocinha Favela, Leblon and Ipanema Beaches, the lagoon and up to Cristo are stunning and a spectacular start to your time in Rio.
Day 2
Christ on a Bike!

Destination: Rio de Janeiro

After breakfast, you begin a morning cycling with the drive up to Vista Dona Marta for your first view of 'Cristo'. From here you pedal through the cool air of the Tijuca Forest, which covers the granite mountains around which Rio is built. A steep climb takes you to Corcovado and the iconic statue of Christ the Redeemer overlooks Rio. The 360˚ views of Guanabara Bay, Sugar Loaf, the Rodrigo de Freitas Lagoon and the beaches ringing the city are unbeatable. Other possible sights include monkeys, sloth and toucans. You continue up the Paineiras road and eventually down the spectacular curves of the Vista Chinesa route, to the lagoon and finally your hotel.
Day 3
Kayaking & Climbing Sugar Loaf

Destination: Rio de Janeiro

In the morning you travel to Praia Vermelha, the beach base of the cable car station that takes you to the top of Sugar Loaf Mountain. First though you take to the ocean from the beach, paddling kayaks out to Ilha da Cotunduba and back. Back on dry land, in the afternoon you circle Urca & Sugar Loaf rocks along a 2hr trail. The final section is the short climb of 25m/80ft up the granite and can be done by beginners of reasonable fitness. Enjoying the views from Sugar Loaf having just climbed it is the most satisfying way to visit one of Rio's postcard places, especially as you can see the sun setting over Rio. After descending by the cable car, you return to your hotel.
Day 4
Pedra da Gavea Hike & Climb

Destination: Rio de Janeiro

A short drive around to Barra de Tijuca takes you under the shadow of Pedra da Gavea, the largest coastal monolith on earth. The trail takes you up through the forest for 2-3hrs before you come out under the Emperor, the iconic rock-face of Gavea! A climb of around 40m with safety equipment and the expert eye of your guide to help if necessary, and another half hour of trail take you to the top of the mountain, with a sheer drop to the Atlantic Ocean and views along to Ipanema Beach and all the way down Barra da Tijuca Beach. The same trail takes you back down to the city below and you return to your hotel. Alternative trails, climbing routes and kayak trips are all possible too.
Day 5
Pedalling to Prainha

Destination: Rio de Janeiro

Another cycling option with less mountains involves the long pedal along the Rio coastline westwards. The new cycle route allows a mostly flat route from Ipanema around the rocks above the ocean to Sao Conrado, in the shadow of the flat-topped Pedra da Gavea. Another new cycle path then continues through tunnels and viaducts to Barra da Tijuca. The longest beach in Rio has 15km of cycle lanes to Recreio, with possible sightings of capybara and caiman along the way. A couple of short hills take you to the wild beaches of Prainha and Grumari, where you can have lunch in an open-air restaurant over the waves before the return journey!
Day 6
Flying Home from Rio

Destination: Rio de Janeiro

One of the most spectacular activities in Rio or any other city is to hang-glide from Pedra Bonita Mountain to land on the beach. Your tandem flight is in the safe hands of our professional instructors, who give you a safety briefing including take-off and landing No prior experience is necessary, just a little courage! The 15min flight soars between the mountains and over the urban forest and circles out over the Atlantic waves before finally landing on the sands of Praia Pepino in Sao Conrado. The most memorable activity in Rio can be done on your final day, although usually better earlier in your stay to give us chance to rearrange in case of unfavourable weather conditions.
