Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in The Pantanal

Destination:

After flying to Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso state in Brazil, you will be picked up at the airport for the 3 hour drive to Rio Mutum Lodge. From the raised dirt road it is easy to spot wildlife on the surrounding plains and in the waters. The largest rodent in the world, the capybara, is especially visible. After settling in, you can enjoy a welcome drink and hear about the activities program before your first experience of the spectacular colours of a Pantanal sunset. Thousands of birds fill the sky as the sun disappears in shades of gold, pink and purple. Dinner is at the lodge, with the evening free to enjoy the sights and sounds around the lodge.
Day 2
The Largest Wetlands in the World

Destination:

After breakfast, you can depart on a guided tour horseback tour into The Pantanal for the best wildlife viewing in South America. The savannah, lakes and hills make a beautiful landscape and the open spaces allow unobstructed views of a whole array of creatures. The journey to Sia Mariana Bay, riding through the waters, gives you the chance to see giant anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, deer and armadillos as well as abundant bird and aquatic life. After returning to the lodge for lunch, you can take a photo safari on the crystal clear waters of the Rio Mutum. Anacondas and giant otters are spotted occasionally in the area. Dinner is at the lodge.
Day 3
Pantanal Wildlife

Destination:

After breakfast, a boat ride and trail hike to Chacororé Bay, a 15km wide lake give you chance to learn more about the delicate ecosystem of The Pantanal, before seeing the aquatic life of the pristine lake and reptile life around its shores. After lunch, a boat trip takes you to one of the largest nesting sites in The Pantanal. After dinner, a night safari takes you to spot nocturnal animals. Many predators such as jaguars, pumas, ocelots and maned wolves hunt in the cooler night. The eyes of some of the 20 million alligators of The Pantanal are very visible at night, and it will feel like you can see at least that many stars in the unpolluted night sky!
Day 4
Pantanal Activities

Destination:

Pousada Rio Mutum has many activities available during your stay, which depend on the season and weather and water conditions. Birdwatching is the most popular leisure activity in the Pantanal Wetlands of course, with their abundance being one of the major reasons why the Pantanal has the highest concentration of fauna on the planet. Studies of Pantanal Birdlife take place at the lodge and local expert guides can tailor your trips to include days purely bird-watching. The aquatic life comes in just as great numbers too, with fishing being the second most popular activity although only allowed in the high waters of March to October.
Day 5
From the Wetlands to the Chapadas

Destination:

At least one morning should be spent admiring the Pantanal sunrise which is a beautiful time of every day although not a peaceful one! The savannah comes alive with thousands of bird, monkey and amphibian calls in a chorus of staggering volume. Parrots, parakeets and macaws seem to be competing to make the most noise as the sun rises. A morning transfer takes you through Cuiaba to the Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park, the Geodesic Centre of South America. This area of flat-topped mountains, waterfalls and high plains has its own flora, fauna and unique geology. After arriving at your hotel, the evening is free to relax.
Day 6
Guimaraes Waterfalls Circuit

Destination:

After breaksfast, you head in the direction of Veu da Noiva, where a trail begins that passes through the cerrado bushlands. You arrive at the Falls Circuit, a complex of 7 waterfalls of varying sizes and names (in English, roughly!) - 7th September; Hydromassage; Jump; Step; Little Beach; Swifts; and Independence. You can take a dip in all the falls. The trail takes around 6 hours of moderate difficulty. The return is along the escarpment of the Vale do Véu da Noiva, finishing with a view of the highest waterfall in Chapada dos Guimaraes, which translates as Bridal Veil Falls. After the hike, you can break for lunch or return to your hotel.
Day 7
Away from Chapada dos Guimaraes

Destination:

Your journey away from the Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park begins in the morning as you drive the 90 minutes or so back to Cuiaba. Your flight from the city could be to Sao Paulo, Rio de Janeiro or Brasilia to connect with international flights there, or you could combine this tour of the Pantanal and Chapada dos Guimaraes National Park with some of our other wonderful ecotourism destinations such as Iguazu Falls and the Amazon Jungle. Connections to other major cities in Brazil are usually made in Brasilia or Sao Paulo.
