Itinerary

Day 1
Over the Amazon Jungle to Manaus

Destination: Manaus

Your flight takes you over the Amazon Jungle to Manaus, flying above miles of nothing but green jungle and silver rivers for the final hour or more. The sight of nothing but trees is a special one if the rainforest cloud clears for you. On arrival in the city, you will be met for transfer to your hotel in the city. A tour of Manaus takes in the amazing array of Amazon produce at the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market and the Floating Dock on the edge of the Rio Negro. You will then visit the Amazon Theatre, the symbol of the city built during the rubber boom that made Manaus famous around the world. You return to your hotel after the tour with the evening free.
Day 2
Cruising the Anavilhanas Archipelago

Destination: Manaus to Anavilhanas Archipelago

In the morning you begin the 3hr road journey across the Rio Negro and upriver to Novo Airao. Here you board and have lunch as the Katerre Expedition embarks on the Rio Negro to Anavilhanas, the largest freshwater archipelago on earth. A smaller launch also takes you to explore the islands and lagoons of the area. A chance for a swim in the Rio Negro waters comes before the vessel heads to the Mirante do Madadá viewpoint. After dinner on board you have the choice to spend the night in your cabin or in a hammock or chalet in the middle of the Amazon Rainforest with a beautiful view of the Rio Negro and the anchored cruise boat.
Day 3
Amazon Encounters

Destination: Anavilhanas Archipelago to Madada

Your day begins with the experience of an Amazon dawn. The forest comes alive with noise and colour as the avian life of the forest wakes up in a chorus of calls. After breakfast you can take a hike, with a 3hr trail through primary Amazon Rainforest to the Madadá Caves. The caboclo people are a mixture of indigenous and European blood. After lunch on board, you visit an indigenous community and learn some of the Yanomami and Tukano native languages before a presentation of colourful Amazon costumes. The boat embarks in the late afternoon for Praia do Sono with dinner and a fire on the beautiful river beach.
Day 4
Amazon Wildlife Spotting

Destination: Jau National Park

Morning breaks at anchor off Praia do Sono before you embark up Rio Jau with its still waters making for photogenic reflections. The Jau National Park is a protected area of Amazon Rainforest with excellent viewing opportunities for bird-life and aquatic mammals. When the waters are high from February to August, the launch takes you through the creeks and channels of the park, with giant otters often spotted. The dry season months bring a journey up the Rio Pauini, with its rapids. After returning, the cruise vessel embarks to visit the Aturiá Community, with a night-time canoe safari to spot nocturnal creatures such as the Amazon caiman.
Day 6
Saying Goodbye to the Amazon

Destination: Novo Airao to Manaus & Away

Your final day in the Amazon brings the chance to say hello to the Amazon River Dolphins, friendly creatures found in the waters of Novo Airao who appear to enjoy the company of humans. Some are pink, with grey and a mix of pink and grey creatures also appearing. After a look at Novo Airao, a traditional boat-building community with Amazon arts and crafts, and a farewell lunch you return to Manaus, arriving at 6pm. Options for evening flights out of Manaus exist, although an extra night in the city may be required. Perhaps combine your Katerre Amazon Expedition with other Brazil destinations such as Rio de Janeiro and Iguazu Falls.
