Our Brazil Surf Tours are all basic ideas that can be tailor-made to match your requirements. Any tour can include one or more destinations, and can be purely dedicated to surfing, or can be mixed with other activities, some regular tourism, and some nightlife. We include all that you need during your trip, the accommodation with breakfast; all airport transfers and other road journeys; any activities and excursions with English-speaking guides and relevant entrance fees; plus some popular extras. For surf tours, we can include board rental or just transport to cope with your own boards if you prefer to bring them. We can also include an expert local surfer to take you to the best breaks and provide local info, or simply arrange the logistics and info to take you to the right places.

Itacare is the surf capital of Bahia, set on the Costa do Cacao of North-East Brazil. High-quality surf amonst spectacular tropical scenery, and with a lively surf scene for afterwards make Itacare one of the best places to surf in Brazil. Small waves suitable for beginners make surf classes popular here, while swells of a few metres also keep the experienced surfers happy!

Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive in the Surf Capital of Bahia!

Destination: Ilheus to Itacare

After flying to the coast of Bahia, you arrive in Ilheus, with a 75km drive up the coast-hugging road bringing an immediate chance to enter the waves at Pe de Serra, the beach below the Serra Grande Viewpoint, with the hidden Prainha nearby too. On arrival in Itacare, you can explore the breaks around town, with Tiririca and Ribeira just a short drive down the coast, with short, fast consistent waves most days of the year. A clean east swell gives tubes at Corais, with a trail needed to access the rocky coastline for this one. To finish you can enjoy sunset from Praia da Concha over the Rio de Contas, and looking out towards the Boca da Barra and Pontal.

Day 2

Itacare Breaks

Destination: Itacare

For your stay in Itacare we can provide a local guide and vehicle to take you around the best surf spots along the coast, or we can include a vehicle for you to drive yourselves. We can also include boards if you prefer not to bring your own. Pontal on the north side of the river has good winter breaks (May to Sep), when the swell and wind come from the south. Boca da Barra, the mouth of the river, has one of the longest breaks in Brazil, 1-2km from from the open sea up to Pontal. Local help definitely required for this one! Prainha (a different one!) has one of the best rights in the region and a consistent left with perfect tube breaks, another trail necessary.

Day 3

Bahia Surf Hotspots!

Destination: Itacare

The tropical surf spots of Itacare have warm waters with wetsuits not necessary. Heading south out of town takes you to the most famous surf beaches of the coastline. Jeribuaçu is difficult to access quieter, with a short, heavy right and a long left. The sand bottom keeps its shape, so the consistent breaks are similar all year. Swells of at least 1m are required, so winter is best. Engenhoca is the best longboard wave of Itacare, with a bay protected from the north winds of summer, and smooth, consistent waves, easy paddling and few currents. Itacarezinho has around 10km of open beach and various breaks from smooth to tubes, and Pedra Preta, a legendary summer rock break.

Day 4

Itacare Surf Classes

Destination: Itacare

Warm waters, good breaks, tropical scenery and a vibrant, laidback Bahian surf culture make Itacare one of best place to learn to surf in Brazil. We can arrange classes with soft boards for complete beginners who have never been on on a surf board before, with small, calm consistent waves to give you the time to get up, and also with longboards for those who have a little experience already and want to move on to the next level. Classes are with expert local surfers for a day or a few days, with plenty of time to put into practice for yourselves what you have learnt. You can take private lessons or as part of the surf school. You should leave Itacare a far better surfer than when you arrived!

Day 5

Itacare Alternative Activities

Destination: Itacare

If you don't want to dedicate all your time to surfing in Itacare then the town and the region has plenty of options that we can include as well. White-water rafting in the forested hills is very popular. Boat trips around the mangrove islands of the Rio de Contas estuary, or out on the open ocean are other options, or trail hikes to rainforest waterfalls. Whale-watching is possible from June to October usually, with humpback whales observed in the ocean off the Bahia coast. A full-day speedboat trip around the tip of Marau to visit the islands of Camamu Bay is a long but highly recommended excursion, and you can also drive to the peninsula and start a boat trip from there.

Day 6

The Last Wave in Itacare!

Destination: Itacare to Ilheus & Away

Your journey back to Ilheus will be arranged to fit in with your flight plan, with the drive taking just over an hour. We can tailor your trip to your requirements and abilities, both for surf and any other activities. We can also include a stay in Itacare as part of a longer tour of Brazil, whether including some regular tourism and activities in places such as Rio, Iguazu Falls, or Chapada Diamantina in Bahia, or as part of a Brazil Surf Safari, visiting the classic surf destinations such as Florianopolis and Imbituba; Ubatuba and the Paulista coastline, and Fernando de Noronha. Wherever you choose to go, your Itacare Surf Tour will undoubtedly be one of your favourite places in Brazil...
