Your Kite-Surfing Tour of Cumbuco in North-East of Brazil begins on arrival in Fortaleza, the state capital of Ceara, the Sunshine State of Brazil. You can kite-surf to your heart's content among the beautiful coastal lands, with dunes, lagoons and stunning natural scenery. Cumbuco and neighbouring Taiba have a little of everything for the experienced kite-surfer, with clean-breaking waves, flat-water shallows, lagoons and many more natural treats.

Cumbuco is an ideal kite-surfing location for beginners too with shallow lagoons the perfect place to start your kite-surf course. Temperatures of 30 degrees C on the sands and 28 degrees in the ocean waters also help to make this an ideal location.  We can tailor the stay to your exact requirements, whether you want us just to help with transfers and accommodation, or for fuller packages including kite-surf equipment rental and brush-up classes from local experts. Away from the kite-surfing then Cumbuco has a laidback, cosmopolitan vibe, with plenty of bars and restaurants on the beaches and the streets behind for evening entertainment.

Combines With: Trips to other classic Kite-Surfing spots of North-East Brazil such as Jericoacoara and Atins, with a Downwinder possibly between some or all of them!

Best Time to Visit: The best winds are usually from June to February, with June still being the end of the wet season, so July to January are usually considered the best times for kite-surfing in the ocean.

Day 1 : The Kite-Surf Capital of Brazil!
Fortaleza to Cumbuco
On arrival in Fortaleza, the state capital of Ceara in the north-east of Brazil, you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred through the edges of the western coastline of the city to Cumbuco. This small town and the surrounding coast has become world-famous as kite-surf capital of Brazil, and one of the finest places to either practice your favourite sport, or to learn it for those who have never kite-surfed before. The few kilometres either side of Cumbuco are classic North-East Brazil beach towns, quiet and laidback, but now with a cosmopolitan kite-surf vibe. You can make Cumbuco and neighouring Taiba your base for as long as you can spend in the area.
Day 2 : Cumbuco Conditions
The strong cross onshore winds that pass westwards along the north-facing coast of Brazil from around June to February make it some of the finest kite-surf territory on earth. The continuous breeze is also responsible for the formation of shallow beaches backed by coastal sand dunes, with lagoons forming between them, giving wonderful options for flat-water kite-surfing as well. Many people visit in the off-season too, just that the winds are not guaranteed every day, and it is also wet season. Temperatures around 30 deg C annually and water temperatures of 28 deg C combine to make ideal conditions in Cumbuco.
Day 3 : Cumbuco Kite-Surf Option
Kite-Surfing in Cumbuco can be a simple case of us organising the transfers and accommodation, then leaving you to walk to the nearest beach with your own equipment. The strong, consistent winds make smaller kites sensible, 6-7.5m usually recommended. We can also organise fuller packages including rental of equipment, local kite-surf guides and support teams, plus a quick brush-up lesson or two. The Brazil Kite-Surf Safari Downwinder is a classic multi-day point-to-point kite-surf trip, exploring the ocean, shallows and headlands from Cumbuco westwards to Jericoacoara, Parnaiba and even Atins on the edge of the Lençois Maranhenses National Park.
Day 4 : Kite-Surf Course for Beginners
The beauty of Cumbuco is that all levels of kite-surf ability are catered for, from the flat water and high waves for experienced kite-surfers, with strong winds to handle, to the shallow sand-bottomed lagoons that are perfect for absolute beginners to learn. Experienced kite-surf instructors provide the full basic instruction package with a course involving 9 hours of group or private kite-surf classes (with female-only groups available at times) taking place over various days in order to become an internationally certified kite-surfer. You begin on the sands learning to control the kite, and (hopefully!) progress to the lagoons and ocean waves!
Day 5 : Ceara Activities
While the high-season for kiting can boast 95% winds from June to February, there still may be some downtime in your stay in Cumbuco when the weather is too calm to kite. The off-season has more possibility of this so it is good to have some alternative activities in mind for when your kites stay packed away for the day. Beach buggies are the best way to get around and explore the interior or the beaches along the coast. There may still be enough waves to surf. The lagoons plus various creeks and channels connecting to the rivers and estuaries can be explored by kayak or stand-up paddle and you can even snorkel a little in some of them.
Day 6 : Flying Away from Ceara!
Cumbuco to Fortaleza & Away
Your stay in Cumbuco comes to an end with the drive back to Fortaleza Airport. You can spend as much time as required in the village, and we can also include Cumbuco as only one of a few fabulous kite-surfing stops along the coast, along with Taiba, Jericoacoara and Atins. It can also make the first stop of an enormous downwinder, along as much of the coastline as you can manage! From Fortaleza you fly away from Ceara, usually to Sao Paulo, Rio or Brasilia to connect homewards from one of those cities, or we can combine your Cumbuco Kite-Surf Tour with any other destination in Brazil, including Rio de Janeiro which also has kite-surf possibilities.
