Pantanal Wetlands Lodges

Enter the Pantanal Wetlands from one of our Pantanal Lodges. Take 4x4 vehicles, horses, bikes and trails to explore the savannah and waterways of this wilderness for the finest wildlife viewing in South America. Photograph caiman and capybara as they cool in the waters, often together. Watch wheeling flocks of parakeets, macaws, parrots and hundreds more species as they fly noisily overhead. Join the giant otters in fishing for piranha, pacu and dourado, but maybe leave the anteaters to dine alone. Take the best chance to see the most beautiful predators on the continent while on night safaris, with puma, ocelot and the magnificent jaguar spotted more here than anywhere else. Enjoy the most colourful skies at sunrise and sunset of every day, and the starriest of starry nights while staying at a Pantanal Lodge with Brazil Adventure Tours.

Itinerary

Day 1
Into the Pantanal Wetlands

Destination: Araras Pantanal Ecolodge

After flying to Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso state in Brazil, you will be picked up at the airport for the 2-3 hour drive to Araras Lodge close to Pocone in the Northern Pantanal. From the raised dirt roads it is easy to spot wildlife on the surrounding savannah and in the waters. The largest rodent in the world, the capybara, is especially visible. After settling in, you can enjoy a welcome drink and hear about the activities program before your first experience of the spectacular colours of a Pantanal sunset, witnessed from the Heron's Lookout Tower after a short hike. Thousands of birds fill the sky as the sun disappears in shades of gold, pink and purple.
Day 2
The Largest Wetlands in the World

Destination: Araras Pantanal Ecolodge

Araras Lodge offers a wide variety of activities high on excitement and low on environmental impact. You can choose to spend your days hiking, horse-riding, on jeep safaris day and night for covering longer distances and canoeing the creeks amongst the Pantanal vegetation while fishing for piranha. All the activities take you out into the largest wetlands in the world, with the chance to experience this unique ecosystem and its native residents including the rare and beautiful hyacinth macaw. The lodge also has a project to protect this largest of macaws, and you can visit the reintroduction centre during your stay to see the work in action.
Day 3
Pantanal Wildlife

Destination: Araras Pantanal Ecolodge

The Pantanal boasts the highest concentration of fauna on the planet with 698 bird species, 80 mammals, 260 fish species and 50 reptiles catalogued until now. Some are rare, many are numerous. Araras Lodge provides an excellent infrastructure to view them, including two observation towers of 10m and 35m overlooking the wetlands. The caiman alligators and capybara rodents are present in great quantities and impossible to miss. Other large mammals which require a little more luck and patience to spot include beautiful big cats such as the jaguar, puma and ocelot. Giant and lesser anteater, tapir, Pantanal deer and coati are just some of the mammals you can hope to encounter.
Day 4
Pantanal Knowledge

Destination: Araras Pantanal Ecolodge

All your excursions from Araras Ecolodge will help to broaden your knowledge of the Pantanal and the flood plain ecosystem, with pointers from your expert naturalist guide. The behaviour of different species has been studied by staff, who explain how each creature relates to others in the Pantanal. You may be lucky enough to watch the local colony of giant otters teaching their youngsters how to swim and fish in the waters of the Rio Clarinho. The animals are playful with each other but aggressive with other species, although this behaviour did not prevent Araras Ecolodge from setting up another conservation project! After dinner strolls under a million Pantanal stars are a feature of each evening if you wish.
Day 5
Preparing to Fly from the Pantanal

Destination: Araras Pantanal Ecolodge to Cuiaba & Away

Rising before dawn is worthwhile in the Pantanal, and at Araras Ecolodge even more so. A short walk to the observation towers allows you to feel part of the spectacular Pantanal dawn chorus. As the colours of day come through and the sun begins to shine on the savannah, you will be surrounded by many different species of birds. After breakfast you begin your final photo safari as the lodge vehicle takes you back up the Transpantaneira Road to Cuiaba, stopping along the way for some final wildlife photo opportunities. On arrival in Cuiaba, you fly away from the Pantanal, perhaps even to one of our other wildlife destinations such as The Amazon.
