Day 1 : Into the Pantanal Wetlands
Cuiaba to Pousada Piuval Pantanal Lodge
After flying to Cuiabá, the capital of Mato Grosso state in Brazil, you will be picked up at the airport for the 2-3 hour drive to Pousada Piuval close to Pocone in the Northern Pantanal. From the raised dirt roads it is easy to spot wildlife on the surrounding savannah and in the waters. The largest rodent in the world, the capybara, is especially visible. After settling in, you can enjoy a welcome drink and hear about the activities program before your first experience of the spectacular colours of a Pantanal sunset. Thousands of birds fill the sky as the sun disappears in shades of gold, pink and purple. Dinner is at the lodge, with the evening free to enjoy the sights and sounds around the lodge.
Day 2 : The Largest Wetlands in the World
Pousada Piuval Pantanal Lodge
Pousada Piuval offers a variety of activities in the Pantanal Wetlands around the area of the lodge. The activities offered depend on the season, weather and ground conditions, with hikes, horse-riding, bicycle rides, boat and vehicle-based trips taking you out with a guide specialised in the flora and fauna of the Pantanal region. The unique plantlife of the Pantanal provides many medicines and curatives that are still only now being discovered by the outside world. Trips on the water allow you to see the acquatic life close up too, with the huge variety of fish providing food for reptiles, birds and mammals as well as humans. You can catch piranha fish, one of the staple foods of Pantanal dishes.
Day 3 : Pantanal Activities
Pousada Piuval Pantanal Lodge
After breakfast you can ride a horse through the floodlands and the forests of The Pantanal. The savannah and the flooded plains make a beautiful landscape in themselves, and the open spaces are perfect for unobstructed views of a whole array of creatures such as giant anteaters, tapirs, capybaras, deer and armadillos. Anacondas and giant otters are spotted occasionally in the area, while alligators are also visible, lazing in the sun on the banks of the rivers and lakes. After lunch at the lodge, you can take a tour by cart or on foot along the ecological trails. An opportunity to fish for piranha can be arranged on the largest lake in the area before returning to the lodge for dinner.
Day 4 : Pantanal Wildlife
Pousada Piuval Pantanal Lodge
The Pantanal boasts the highest concentration of fauna on the planet with 698 bird species, 80 mammals, 260 fish species and 50 reptiles catalogued until now. Some are rare, many are numerous. Staying at Pousada Piuval gives you many opportunities to encounter the wildlife on your excursions. The caiman alligators and capybara rodents are present in great quantities and impossible to miss. Other large mammals which require a little more luck and patience to spot include beautiful big cats such as the jaguar, puma and ocelot. Monkeys, giant and lesser anteater, tapir, Pantanal deer and coati are just some of the mammals you can hope to encounter.
Day 5 : Flying Away from the Pantanal
Pousada Piuval Pantanal Lodge to Cuiaba
At least one morning should be spent admiring the Pantanal sunrise which is a beautiful time of every day although not a peaceful one! The savannah comes alive with thousands of bird, monkey and amphibian calls in a chorus of staggering volume. Parrots, parakeets and macaws seem to be competing to make the most noise as the sun rises. A morning transfer takes you back to Cuiaba from where you fly away from the Pantanal Wetlands and on to either Brasilia, Sao Paulo or Rio de Janeiro to connect with your onward flight. You can also combine the Pantanal with any of our other destinations in Brazil such Iguazu Falls and the Amazon.
