Mt Roraima Expedition - Three Nations Travel

Mt Roraima Expedition - Three Nations

9 Night Trip, 6 Night Trek

Hiking Tours of Brazil

Our Hiking Tours of Brazil are all basic ideas that can be tailor-made to match your requirements. Any tour can include one or more destinations, and can be purely dedicated to hiking, although some mountains may include a little climbing that is still suitable for those without much experience. We can also arrange serious climbing trips. We can also mix them with other activities such as climbing, kayaking or tandem hang-gliding flights, some regular tourism, and some nightlife. We include all that you need during your trip, the accommodation with breakfast; all airport transfers and other road journeys; any activities and excursions with English-speaking guides and relevant entrance fees; plus some popular extras. For our Hiking Tours of Brazil, you only need to bring your favourite hiking boots and regular outdoor clothing and equipment. Any parts where a little climbing is necessary will include ropes, helmets and safety harnesses. All hikes and climbs are undertaken with an experienced, qualified local guide, with activity insurance included.

This Amazon Jungle Expedition Trek takes you to the top of Mount Roraima, one of the highest mountains in the country. The flat-topped tepui mountain is deep in the heart of the jungle, on the northern border with Venezuela. The trek is tough, taking you to 2,875m above sea level to camp on the plateau, with stunning views from the plateua over the Amazon Jungle at clear moments.

The Mount Roraima Three Nations Trek includes three nights of camping on the summit of the mountain, where temperatures can be far lower than you might expect from a trip to the Amazon Jungle close to the equator! There are regular departures in small groups which you can join if necessary, please contact us for details as price does depend on how many people are in the trekking group. The best idea is to contact us with your own fully formed little group, and then we can be more flexible to offer you the starting dates that you prefer. Please check fixed departure dates for more information.

This Mount Roraima Trek is a serious, multi-day trek, which requires people to be of good physical fitness and health. Amazon Expeditions are hard work, with heat and humidity a factor at lower altitudes, while much cooler temperatures are found at the top of the tepui. As long as this doesn't put you off, then any of the three options (the Mystic Cathedral option and the Makunaima option, with 4 and 5 nights on the summit respectively) can provide you with magical moments and unique experiences that make the Mount Roraima treks so special.

An extension to Angel Falls, the highest waterfall on earth, is also possible after descending from Mount Roraima.

Itinerary

Day 1
Arrive in Boa Vista

Destination: Manaus to Boa Vista

Your flight arrives in Boa Vista after connecting via Manaus (in most cases). Boa Vista is the state capital of Roraima, the most northerly state in Brazil which borders both Venezuela and Guyana. This small city was founded on the banks of the Rio Branco in 1890, and now has a population of just over 250k. It is also the only one of 26 Brazilian state capitals located in the northern hemisphere, with the equator lying 300km to the south. On arrival in the city you will be welcomed at the airport and transferred to your hotel. The rest of the day is then free to enjoy Amazon cuisine and recover from the journey to the Amazon Jungle.
Day 2
Deep in the Guyana Highlands

Destination: Boa Vista to Santa Elena de Uairen

Boa Vista lies south of the tepuis of the Pakaraima mountain chain, part of the Guyana Shield which stretches across the triple frontier. The Guyana Highlands are some of the oldest geological formations on the planet, dating back to the Precambrian period over 2 billion years ago. After a morning briefing on the Mount Roraima Trek, a check of your equipment and fitness, and a run through all the details of anything extra that you may need to buy, the group departs at 2pm for Santa Elena de Uairen, the Venezuelan border town 220km to the north. After arriving around 6pm, you stop for the night in Santa Elena. Temperatures from 25-32C.
Day 3
Tropical Savannah Trekking

Destination: Santa Elena to Paraitepuy & Rio Kukenan Camp

After an early breakfast in town, you drive another 100km into Venezuela to Paraitepuy, at an altitude of 1,300m. After organisation of the equipment and baggage, a 5hr trail takes you 16km across the Grand Savannah, with possibile wildlife sightings of giant anteaters, to the 1,100m campsite. After crossing through three rivers on foot, including the Rio Tek and the Rio Kukenan, camp is mounted in view of the 600m waterfall on the mountain of the same name next door to Roraima. The late afternoon brings the chance to take photos of the tepui and their various falls, and some time to learn about the area from your guides. Temperatures ~25C.
Day 4
The Slopes of Mount Roraima

Destination: Rio Kukenan Camp to Mt Roraima Base Camp

Your morning begins hiking to the base of the tepui, only around 8km away but with around 70% being uphill in hot, humid conditions, the trail usually takes around 4-5 hours to complete. On arrival at the 1,850m Base Camp around 2pm, mounting camp comes before lunch and the chance to enjoy the fresh mountain streams. The rest of the day leaves plenty of time to relax, take photos and enjoy the views of the surrounding savannah, which become more expansive as you climb the slopes. Cliffs of 400-600m tower over the campsite, although clouds can often obscure the tops, with waterfalls appearing from out of the mist. Temperatures ~20C.
Day 5
Topping the Tepui

Destination: Mt Roraima Base Camp to Summit

Today you strike out for the summit of Mount Roraima! The trail is around 4-5hrs uphill, with plenty of breaks during the 4.5km as this is one of the most beautiful sections of the whole trek. The Amazon basin spreads out before you, with endless vistas of savannah, jungle and other tepui. There are also diverse species of orchid and small birds not found outside the region as the trail passes creeks and a waterfall. The plateau is usually reached by 2pm, giving you chance to catch your breath at 2,734m. After a short hike to the camping area, camp is mounted and the afternoon is free. Temperatures ~10C during the day; 0-5C at night.
Day 6
Crystal Trails & Triple Frontiers

Destination: Mount Roraima Summit

There are not many hikes of 24km that can take you across three countries on the top of a mountain. Today does exactly this, beginning with the Crystal Trail through the Valley of Crystals, around 4hrs out and 3.5hrs back. El Foso is a mysterious pool formed in a depression on the plateau, with the waters disappearing into the mountain below. The hike is made easier as most equipment is left behind at the camp. After passing across the meeting point of Venezuela, Brazil and Guyana, you return to the camp in the late afternoon. This day showcases the different landscapes of the plateau, from bare rock trails and mineral delights to lush vegetation.
Day 7
Summit Hiking & Stunning Views

Destination: Mount Roraima Summit

A relaxed day of short hikes around the summit of Mt Roraima totalling around 6km, with the chance to leave rucksacks behind for the day. The highest point of the mountain is Pedra Maverick at 2,875m, with stunning panoramic views all across the Gran Sabana of Venezuela, including the trail already hiked to the base. The Jacuzzi Pools are a short hike away, before the spectacular viewpoints from the La Ventana Cliffs, stretching vertically down to the base of the tepui, with waterfalls tumbling from the top and Mt Kukenan in the distance - an unforgettable window on the vast world of the tropical savannah.
Day 8
All Downhill from Here

Destination: Mount Roraima Summit to Rio Tek Camp

The time comes to return to civilisation, breaking camp in the morning on the top of Mt Roraima and hiking 4hrs down to Base Camp. After lunch and a short break you continue to the Rio Trek Camp. After around 14km of hiking mostly downhill, arrival at Rio Tek should be around 4pm. Another chance comes to take photos and take a dip before dinner. The temperatures return to a more agreeable level, the chilly, misty mountain tops are left behind and your final night on the trail can be spent enjoying the spectacular starry skies of the tropical savannah, which should be twinkling above you after sunset. Temperatures ~25C.
Day 9
The End of the Mount Roraima Trail

Destination: Rio Tek Camp to Paraitepuy & Boa Vista

The final stage of your Mt Roraima Expedition comes with the trail across the tropical savannah from Rio Tek Camp back to Paraitepuy. Around 15km of hiking before midday, when you begin the road journey back to Santa Elena de Uairen, into Brazil and down to Boa Vista. Before entering the vehicles, the park guards will perform an inspection of people and equipment to make sure that you have taken only photographs and left only footprints. Arrival back at the hotel in Boa Vista is usually around 8pm, and there you can unpack, shower, enjoy dinner and relax. Your group is sure to have many photos and memories to share before departure.
Day 10
Conquered by Mount Roraima

Destination: Boa Vista & Away

Your journey away from Boa Vista will usually take you via Manaus or the capital Brasilia with most connections to other parts of Brazil from there. You may leave the tropical savannah of northern Brazil behind, but the memories of your trek to the top of the tepui, your photographs of Mount Roraima and the surrounding tropical savannah will likely stay with you for a lifetime. This Mt Roraima Three Nations Expedition Trek is one of many fabulous expeditions in the Boa Vista area, and they can all be combined with our other fantastic destinations across the continent. You can enjoy them all with Brazil Adventure Tours.
