Big Phil Scolari back for 2014 World Cup

Luiz Felipe Scolari, the 2002 World Cup winning coach, is back in charge of Brazil for the 2014 World Cup Finals, hoping to repeat his success from Korea and Japan. Felipão - which means 'Big Phil' in Portuguese - has been brought back to take charge of the misfiring Selecção (the Brazil National Team) in place of Mano Menezes. The Brazilian Football Association - the CBF, now led by José Maria Marin after the enforced resignation of Ricardo Teixeira - decided to act after a series of dull and disappointing performances that didn't bode well for Brazil's hopes of a sixth World Cup win.

The whole country is desperate to do well in their own World Cup tournament, to erase the pain of losing the final match of the 1950 World Cup tournament to winners Uruguay. This defeat, which even led to a change of kit for Brazil from their 'unlucky' all-white to the modern classic based on the colours of the flag, has never been forgotten. Big Phil is the man on whose shoulders rest the heavy hopes of the whole host nation!

After 8 years coaching mostly outside of Brazil for the Portugal national team, Chelsea in London, and for Bunyodkor in Uzbekistan with varying , Scolari returned to Brazil with Palmeiras in 2010. The Copa Brasil victory of 2012 seems to have convinced the CBF that he was once again the best choice to lead Brazil. With no competitive fixtures to play and only the 2013 Confederations Cup coming before the World Cup, and no forward line of Ronaldinho, Ronaldo and Rivaldo as in 2002, Big Phil has a big job on his hands...
