Tucan Amazon Lodge is a simple, rustic lodge built on a promontory on the shores of Lago Acajatuba. Run by a couple who have lived there for over 20 years, Flavio and Cecilia take great care to ensure that all guests enjoy their jungle experience and also Amazon cuisine to the maximum. Typical Amazon activities included during your stay are jungle hikes; boat and canoe trips around the lake, creeks and rivers; piranha fishing; caiman spotting at night; visits to local indigenous communities; and swimming with the local Amazon River dolphins nearby.

Itinerary

Day 1
Over the Amazon Jungle to Manaus

Destination: Manaus

Your flight takes you over the Amazon Jungle to Manaus, flying above miles of nothing but green jungle and silver rivers for the final hour or more. The sight of nothing but trees is a special one if the rainforest cloud clears for you. On arrival in the city, you will be met for transfer to your hotel in the city. A tour of Manaus takes in the amazing array of Amazon produce at the Adolpho Lisboa Municipal Market and the Floating Dock on the edge of the Rio Negro. You will then visit the Amazon Theatre, the symbol of the city built during the rubber boom that made Manaus famous around the world. You return to your hotel after the tour with the evening free.
Day 2
Journey to the Jungle

Destination: Manaus to Tucan Amazon Lodge

In the morning you will be picked up for the two and a half hour journey through the jungle, completing the journey to Tucan Lodge by boat amongst the sights and sounds of the Amazon. The lodge sits on the edge of Lago de Acajatuba, part of the Rio Negro river system, and after checking in to your chalet built on stilts to cope with the huge change in the water levels of the Amazon, you can enjoy your first look at the Amazon. Afternoon options include paddling a canoe around the lake and amongst the trees of the flooded forests, while a night safari gives you a close-up look at the caiman. Snakes, tarantulas and amphibians can also be spotted by torchlight!
Day 3
Amazon Jungle Activities

Destination: Tucan Amazon Lodge

Your time at Tucan Amazon Lodge can be spent engaging in Amazon activities, with two excursions per day being the usual idea, morning and afternoon. Daytime activities include hiking through the jungle to learn about the forest plants, vines and trees, and the vast array of uses for them, from food to medicine, and construction materials for living, sleeping and paddling on the waters, which you can do by canoe at dawn. The creeks and flooded forests are also where you can fish for piranha - the most famous Amazon fish is not always as dangerous to us as humans are to them. You can also learn how many uses of those sharp teeth there are in the Amazon.
Day 4
Amazon Rainforest Residents

Destination: Tucan Amazon Lodge

Visits to local riverin communities to learn more about traditional ways life Amazon life, showing the many uses of the manioc root, the staple diet of the Amazon, and the methods to process it. An extra option is to visit the indigenous communities of the rainforest, where you can observe representations of ceremonies and rituals in the traditional villages. You can also learn some words of tupi-guarani, the base language of many Amazon tribes. You can also become an Amazon Rainforest resident for a night, sleeping in hammocks and eating food cooked on the fire. The jungle is alive with sounds of creatures to keep you company, before the birds wake up at dawn.
Day 5
Amazon Wildlife

Destination: Tucan Amazon Lodge

Amazon Animals you may encounter during your stay at Tucan Amazon Lodge include howler, squirrel, spider and woolly monkeys; iguanas; and the wonderful slow-moving sloth. Amazon bird-life is especially abundant, with toucans, macaws, parrots and many more colourful tropical species; acquatic life is also well represented, with huge fish such as the huge pirarucu and the peacock bass. Turtles can also be seen sunning themselves on rocks and logs. One of the highlights of a stay at Tucan is the interaction with the nearby population of Amazon River dolphins, always one of the highlights of any stay in the Lake Acajatuba area.
Day 6
Saying Goodbye to the Amazon

Destination: Tucan Amazon Lodge to Manaus & Away

If you can manage to leave your new friends, you begin the boat and road journey from Tucan Amazon Lodge back to the Real World. From the airport in Manaus, you can fly either directly away from Brazil to Miami, or you can fly on to Sao Paulo, Rio or Brasilia and connect with international flights there. All our Amazon Lodge tours can be combined with any of our other wonderful destinations in Brazil and South America, and can also be altered to your specific requirements. Your journey home gives you chance to reflect on the wonders encountered during your trip, the memories of the Amazon and its many colourful inhabitants.
