The MV Desafio Amazon Cruise

The MV Desafio is a handsome medium-sized schooner with space for 24 passengers to cruise the Amazon in plenty of style, and with plenty of space too. The three-masted vessel covers three routes, all with regular departures, two each of 3 nights duration, both from Thursday to Sunday, and a longer cruise of 7 days from Thursday to Wednesday. The shorter cruises cover the Anavilhanas Archipelago as one option, plus the closest reaches of it plus the Iranduba and Meeting of the Waters region, and a quick loop of the Rio Solimoes as another. The longer cruise is a combination of all these areas. All cruises begin and end in Manaus.

Itinerary

Day 1
Over the Amazon Jungle to Manaus

Destination: Manaus

Wednesday. Your flight takes you over the Amazon Jungle to Manaus, flying above miles of nothing but green jungle and silver rivers for the final hour or more, a special sight if the rainforest cloud clears for you. On arrival in the city, you will be met for transfer to your hotel in the city. An afternoon tour takes you to look at the famous Teatro Amazonas, the opera house built in the middle of the jungle. You can also visit the Adolfo Lisbao Market with produce from all over the Amazon region. After returning to your hotel, the rest of the day is then free to relax and recover from your journey to the city at the heart of the Amazon Rainforest.
Day 2
Embarking on the MV Desafio

Destination: Manaus to the Rio Negro

Thursday. After meeting in the lobby of the Tropical Hotel, you board the MV Desafio and embark on your journey up the Rio Negro. The acidic waters of this major Amazon tributary mean that mosquitoes cannot breed. An on-board welcome from your multilingual naturalist guide gives you an insight into what you can look forward to seeing in the next few days. You cruise upriver and stop to fish for piranha, the Amazon fish whose sharp teeth have many different uses for local communities, as well as providing the basis for regional soup and other dishes. A night-time trip takes you to spot caiman, the largest reptiles in South America.
Day 3
Amazon Jungle Adventures

Destination: Anavilhanas Archipelago

Friday. You wake in the Anavilhanas Archipelago where a trip around some of the creeks and channels of the world\'s largest freshwater archipelago gives you a close up look at the ecosystem of the Rio Ariau, with your guide explaining the flora and fauna that make up the islands. After cruising up the Rio Cueiras, a hike through the Amazon Rainforest is followed by a visit to a local community. Here you can learn some of the methods used by indigenous people to adapt and survive in the largest rainforest on earth, including hunting, cooking and the use of medicinal plants. A final cruise takes you through the creeks of the Rio Apuau.
Day 4
Amazon Encounters

Destination: Rio Pagodao to Rio Solimoes

Saturday. An early start allows you to enjoy the sights and sounds of the Amazon Dawn Chorus, as the avian world of the jungle brings in each day in a cacophony of colour. A trip up the Igarape do Tupe brings a visit to witness a representation of the rituals developed by indigenous communities of the Amazon Jungle. After cruising downstream on the Rio Negro, you pass the Meeting of the Waters to cruise up the first part of the Rio Solimoes. At the Janauari Lake, you can observe the wildlife of this nature reserve, and also the Vitoria Regina giant water lilies. You may also come close to the smaller local caiman and even an anaconda.
Day 5
Back to Manaus & Disembark

Destination: Meeting of the Waters to Manaus & Away

Sunday. A sunrise breakfast can be taken at the Meeting of the Waters where two huge rivers of different colours, the Negro and the Solimoes, meet but refuse to mix due to differences in temperature, density and flow speed. Only downstream from here is the giant river known as The Amazon. You return to Manaus and transfer to the airport for your onward flight. The MV Desafio Amazon Cruise can also be combined with any other destination in Brazil such as Rio de Janeiro, the Pantanal and Iguazu Falls. *Please note: The MV Desafio Amazon Cruise embarks from Manaus most Thursdays. This is the Maguary route, others also exist.
